I only found out through doing this that Alex Chilton was in The Box Tops. I only discovered Big Star a few years ago when I heard September Gurls on the radio and thought at first it was Teenage Fanclub. It was quite a shock that the signature sound of one of my favourite bands was actually borrowed from these early hippies!
